This glass pear was created by Appalachian Glass Products in Weston, WV in commemoration of Fairmont’s Bicentennial for 2020.
Why a pear? Boaz Fleming founded Middletown in 1820, became Fairmont in 1843. When Boaz arrived to the area he brought a small sapling pear that he had nurtured over 300 miles. He planted it near the Fairmont Hotel (now Unity Apartments) downtown where it grew until 1936. A cane was made from the tree and is displayed at the Marion County Historical Museum.
