"Fairmont Bicentennial" by local artist, Sandra Cress
Local artist Sandra Cress highlights two of Fairmont’s most well-known architectural features
in her winning design, the High Level Bridge and the Gold Dome of the Marion County
In her rendering, Cress envisions the number 200 in a larger than life body of steel standing ata height 7 feet and with a 4-inch-wide by 11-foot-long footprint, suspended on a rectangular pedestal.
The numbers are constructed of a tubular metal. The 4 inch lines create the shape of each
number. The centers of the numbers are fully transparent except where the Bridge is drawn
with stainless steel.
The top of the inside lines of the number two are drawn in the shape of the courthouse dome, and inside the bottom line of the two stands the numbers 1820 – 1920. The High Level Bridge is drawn to go from one zero through the other.
The sculpture is made to be approachable and allow selfies and photos which will allow
people to interact with the structure and share and celebrate the city with their friends and
family from afar.
The completion and installation of this project is expected in the fall of 2020.
